Course DescriptionHorticultural Skills

We offer several Horticultural Skills Training courses all of which are QQI certified.  Courses are delivered by a QQI certified instructor and have both practical and theory elements. They offer hands on practical experience in the topics covered.  If you require a Horticultural course other than the ones listed here, please contact us as it may be something we can offer you.  The Horticultural Skills Training courses we currently offer are:

Establishing Trees & Shrubs – this course instructs participants on how to plant a range of trees and shrubs; train plants to grow; address health and safety issues and much more.  Upon successful completion of the course the participant will receive a QQI level 4 certificate in Establishing Trees and Shrubs 4N0666 (10 credits).

Safe Horticultural Practices – this course instructs participants on how to identify common horticultural problems such as plant quality, soil quality, pests and diseases etc., how to apply compost, manure and fertiliser and much more.  Upon successful completion of the course the participant will receive a QQI level 4 certificate in Safe Horticultural Practice 4N0719 (10 credits)

Plant Identification, Care and Maintenance – this course will help participants identify plants, develop an understanding of different plants needs and how to care and maintain each plant.  Upon successful completion of the course the participant will receive a QQI level 4 certificate in Plant Identification, Care and Maintenance 4N1186 (10 credits)


Course Content

Establishing Trees & Shrubs

  • Cultivating a planting area to a consistent depth
  • Soil preparation techniques
  • Compost, manure, and fertiliser
  • Planting bare-rooted trees
  • Planting shrubs (bare rooted and containerised)
  • Supports & Tree ties
  • Pinching out; Growing point; de-budding; dead heading and pruning

Safe Horticultural Practices

  • Specific Safety Hazards
  • Hazard Symbols and instruction
  • Codes of practices for pesticide application
  • Lifting techniques
  • PPE use and requirements
  • Dealing with Hazards
  • Prevention procedure for the environment
  • Use lawn mowers, strimmers, hedge trimmers, tractors and pruning equipment
  • Health and Safety

Plant Identification, Care, and Maintenance

  • Identify a range of common plants from a range of categories
  • Understand main use and optimal growth
  • Plant a range of plants in a range of settings
  • Water a range of plants and under-stand watering requirements based on conditions and time of year
  • Implement weed control in a variety of methods
  • Demonstrate procedures to protect plants from frost and wind
  • Protect plants from pests and diseases
  • Operate safety procedure

  • Anyone working in a Horticultural environment

Assessment

  • Practical skills assessment by Tutor during course
  • In-class written assessment by Tutor during course

Entry Requirements

Participants must:

  • have a very good understanding of both written and verbal English
  • bring photo ID and their PPSN with them
  • hold a QQI Level 3 certificate, or have relevant work/life experience in the topic
  • wear work boots

Course Summary

Duration:              4 days plus some work done in participants own time (per course)

Accreditation:    QQI Level 4 (see course description above for course specific qualification)

Validity:                Certificate has no expiry date
