Course Description
Irish Sign Language (ISL) is the language used by the majority of Deaf people in the Republic of Ireland. This ISL course is useful for personal and business environments and teaches the participant how to communicate using ISL for everyday situations.
Delivered in a relaxed, casual environment, this course offers an Introductory level, and ISL Level 1 and Level 2 depending on the individuals needs.
Introductory level – Participants complete one 8 week module
Level 1 – Participants complete a further two 8 week modules
Level 2 – Participants complete a further three 8 week modules
Course Content
- Introduction to the deaf culture & society
- Learning the alphabet
- Everyday vocabulary associated with conversation
- Emphasis on conversational practice
- Phrases and grammar
Who Should Attend
- Anyone who wishes to learn how to use ISL (Irish Sign Language)
Assessment
- No formal assessment for the Introduction Level
- In-class practical assessment by an external examiner for Level 1 & Level 2
Entry Requirements
Participants must:
- have a good understanding of the English language
- bring photo ID with them
- have completed the Introductory level to progress to Level 1
- have completed Level 1 to progress to Level 2
Course Summary
Duration: 1 hr per week for 8 weeks per Module
Accreditation: Irish Sign Language Association
Validity: Certificate has no expiry date
Cost: €80 per person per 8 week module plus exam fees where relevant (May Qualify for DSP Funding – Please enquire for further details)
